About the Book

Emerging adults feel the ache of loneliness and long to belong. They are also exiting the American church at such a dramatic clip that the fundamental spiritual fabric of our country will be eroded over the next thirty years. Christian leaders who create family-like communities of belonging will reverse these trends, reach and form young adults, and will help pioneer the next great awakening.

To imagine renewal, you have to take a closer look at the emerging adult life-stage. In this book you will learn more about the fires of life that every Millennial and GenZ experiences in their twenties, and how you can use these fires to forge emerging adults together into discipleship communities. Any church leader can use the forged-family principles to develop the raw, unmasked, vulnerable, and intimate Jesus communities for which young adults long to be a part.

This is a moment, unlike any we have experienced in our lifetimes past, to be bold, think fresh, and to imagine what an in-breaking dawn of awakening would look like for these generations and the church. Now is the time to pursue church-as-family.

What People Are Saying

Most church leaders in the West are acutely aware of the massive hemorrhaging of young adults from the church. The stats are terrifying, and the picture is bleak. So, what’s the hope for the future? The hope must be for a move of the Spirit that revitalizes faith in the emerging generations. This hope should drive us to our knees in prayer, but it should equally lift us to our feet, ready for action. This book is a rallying cry for the church to establish intimate communities that take seriously the spiritual formation of our young people in an extremely challenging cultural moment, so they can carry the fire of God when it falls. If you care about young adults and the renewal of the church, do whatever it takes to get a copy this brilliant book.

Lead Pastor,Kings Cross Church, and Author of All Things New

What makes this book different is that Austin is not talking about emerging generations, he’s talking as part of the demographic that he is also looking to serve. This perspective is invaluable to peers, parents, and seasoned leaders alike. He also isn’t talking theology or offering bright ideas without hard-won practice on the ground. I appreciate Austin’s depth and insight and academic gifting, but it is his personal and compassionate voice as a pastor and friend—currently living the very things he is writing—that makes this work so powerful. All of us seeking to see God turn the tide of faith in Jesus and belonging in his church should read this and be ready to apply its wisdom.

Someone once said, “If you truly listen to people, they will tell you how to lead them to Jesus Christ.” In Forged, that’s exactly what Austin Wofford has done. Rooted in his wealth of personal experience and wide-ranging research, he has listened carefully to today’s emerging adults and understands their profound heart-cry for relationship, family, and a new way of being church. Everyone who cares about reaching today’s emerging adults should read this book.

Many of us realize that we are at a whatever-it-takes moment when it comes to emerging adults in our churches and families. We know that we can no longer stand by and continue hemorrhaging them away as they suffer in isolation. Yet so much of the time, we hardly know where to start. Austin Wofford points us toward deeper understanding and faithful, strategic response. And he should know as an emerging leader himself with experience in the trenches of engaging his generation. Forged is a must-read for pastors, campus ministry leaders, parents and grandparents, and anyone sharing hope for a new move of God’s grace in our day.
