Here’s a bit about the series from J.D.:

Some years back I had this sudden breakthrough conviction. I realized that though I claimed to love Jesus and to follow him, I had lost touch with him. Then it hit me why. I had lost touch with the primary story of the Bible as it unfolded in the core books of the Bible: Matthew, Mark, Luke and John—the books, without which, we wouldn’t even be reading the Bible. I needed to get back in deep and immersive touch with both the Story of Jesus and the stories of Jesus, and I needed to stay in touch.

I realized two things were true. 1. Jesus was, is now, and ever shall be who Jesus was, is now, and ever shall be in the Gospels. 2. If I am not in deep, regular, and immersive contact with the Gospels, Jesus will slowly and amorphously become—to me—whatever I want him to be; which is actually just a glorified projection of myself with a little Jesus dust sprinkled on top.

Then I had an idea. What if I started reading a chapter of the Gospels each day, in succession, until I read all four of them? I counted them up. There are a total of 89 chapters. That meant in three months I could cover them all, and if I kept going, I could read them four times in a year.
This has been life changing for me. I stopped reading to “get something out of the Bible” and began reading to “get myself into the Story.” In other words, I was no longer reading the Bible for “extraction” but for “immersion.” In fact, I found I was no longer reading the Bible for myself, but I was beginning to read it “for Jesus sake.”

It has changed me so much I wanted to invite you into the practice. This fall on the Wake-Up Call we will read the four gospels together—a chapter a day—for 89 consecutive days. I think I am going to call the series: GOSPELLING: Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus.
