Peter, We Need a Short Break

LISTEN NOW!

March 11, 2022

1 Peter 3:1-7 NIV

Wives, in the same way submit yourselves to your own husbands so that, if any of them do not believe the word, they may be won over without words by the behavior of their wives, 2 when they see the purity and reverence of your lives. 3 Your beauty should not come from outward adornment, such as elaborate hairstyles and the wearing of gold jewelry or fine clothes. 4 Rather, it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God’s sight. 5 For this is the way the holy women of the past who put their hope in God used to adorn themselves. They submitted themselves to their own husbands, 6 like Sarah, who obeyed Abraham and called him her lord. You are her daughters if you do what is right and do not give way to fear.

7 Husbands, in the same way be considerate as you live with your wives, and treat them with respect as the weaker partner and as heirs with you of the gracious gift of life, so that nothing will hinder your prayers.

CONSIDER THIS

Wives, in the same way submit yourselves to your own husbands

O.K. friends of Jesus, can I be honest?

I need a day off from dealing with hard issues here. Peter is absolutely wearing me out. And I suspect because Peter is wearing me out I may be wearing you out a bit too. So instead of tackling “wives submit to your husbands today,” which I promise to get to, I want to do two things.

First—My Dad has called me the last two mornings early with an unusual urgency pleading with me to lead the Daily Text Community in prayer for the people of Ukraine. So I will do that below. Second, I want to ask you to be sure and read the amazing news update in the PS today.

Almighty God—Father, Son and Holy Spirit,

We come before you today to declare Peace, in the name Jesus, over the war taking place in Eastern Europe. We boldly ask you to establish and strengthen the bond of Peace across the Body of Christ in Russia and Ukraine, draw near to all the followers of Jesus scattered across these nations and bind them together in supernatural love that moves with the power of the Gospel.

Let your Kingdom break forth in demonstrations of Peace in ways that confound the ways of sin, darkness, death and evil. We pray for you to intervene in the hearts and minds of the leaders of Russia, to turn from their invasion and to seek Peace. We pray you would strengthen the invading soldiers with the resolve of human decency and compassion and a miraculous empowerment to lay down their arms in the face of such egregious destruction and loss of innocent life. We pray for the leaders of Ukraine, to protect and preserve them from harm and to fill them with such a spirit of travail and prayer that it touches Heaven and changes the course of life on earth for their country.

We pray for the leaders of governments around the world, for wisdom and courage for the facing of this hour. We rebuke the spirit of fear that would cower in the face of evil rather than confront it. We cry out for an awakening of the church around the world, to realize both our responsibility and our power to intervene and exercise our Kingdom authority for such a time as this.

We pray you would leave in the wake of this manmade disaster and all its ruins the seeds of a great awakening and the raising up of a generation who would rebuild the ruins and who would be called the repairer of broken walls, and the restorer of streets to dwell in.

Finally, and most urgently, we pray for the children who are crying and afraid, many of whom may be lost and alone, wondering if they will ever see their fathers again, longing for the safety of their homes, anxious about their next meal, afraid for their very survival. Holy Spirit send wave on wave of compassion in the midst of trauma, light in darkness, and the peace only love can bring in the midst of utter madness.

We ask these things, declaring the things that are not yet as though they were already, believing in your power to do beyond all we can ask or even imagine, and trusting in the strong name of Jesus Christ, in whose name we pray, Amen.

P.S. AMAZING NEWS

Some months ago I wrote a P.S. here where I extended two opportunities. The first was to consider sponsoring a day or more (or any part thereof) of the Daily Text for 2022. The second opportunity was for someone to match those gifts enabling us to double down on our investment in this daily extravagant sowing mission. People told me I was crazy to mention such a thing in a P.S., but I sensed the boldness of Jesus to do it.

So the daily sponsorship comes to $365 (or roughly $30/month). The match came to $133,225. Many people seized the opportunity. I was so encouraged I all but forgot about the match invitation. About a week ago, as a complete surprise, a family who wishes to remain anonymous contacted us and said Jesus laid it on their hearts to make the match gift!!! We were blown away.

It turns out we are just over half way there (cue Bon Jovi) to sponsoring 2022’s Daily Text. These generous friends are matching all of those gifts so far. And they will match it the rest of the way to 365 days. So we are right at 200 days and counting, leaving us with 165 days left. If you want to jump in you can do it here. And thanks for even considering it and for rejoicing with us in the blessing of this good news.

WHAT IS THIS? Wake-Up Call is a daily encouragement to shake off the slumber of our busy lives and turn our eyes toward Jesus. Each morning our community gathers around a Scripture, a reflection, a prayer, and a few short questions, inviting us to reorient our lives around the love of Jesus that transforms our hearts, homes, churches, and cities.

  1. JD, I wish to offer two thoughts that came to mind as I read today’s Daily Text . First of all, Peter’s words to Christian Wives character should apply to us all, as we are all collectively the bride of Christ. Secondly, as outsiders to the war in Eastern Europe, we need to be careful not to take sides, as there appears to be a lot more background to the causes leading up to this conflict, then are being reported . There appears to be deep corruption involving the leadership on both sides. Once again, it’s the citizenry on both sides that will ultimately pay the heavy price of war. Thankfully the prayer you offered up seems to remain neutral. I’m praying for not only what you suggested, but also that God would reveal all the corruption leading up to this crisis as well as the corrupt influence of outside sources. This whole mess has Satan’s fingerprints all over it. Truth is the best weapon against deceit.

  2. Your timing is amazing. This morning, before I came to the Daily Text, I’ve been writing about peacemakers. O, how the world needs more of them. I will be posting it on my blog this morning.

Thank you for your compassion filled prayer today. I appreciate you and your dad’s heart for peace. If weeping is taking sides, I’m taking sides. I’ve been weeping for the people of Ukraine daily. I’ve been praying that that God awaken the conscience of the Russian soldiers and that they obey their conscience instead of their orders to bomb where civilians are and to invade another country.
