Yesterday, Today, and Forever: The Way Ahead

January 29, 2021

Hebrews 13:8 (NIV)

Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.

We are on a journey together. It is the journey of awakening. I thought it would be helpful to take a minute to get our bearings.

Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.

We are following a quite storied and very ancient calendar. We call it the Awakening Calendar. We have passed through Advent and the Christian New Year. We have just journeyed deep into the well of the Word of God. We now find ourselves in a journey of slow ascent. They are the days of the Epiphany of our Lord, where he reveals himself from one degree of glory to the next. This gradual ascent will lead to our annual climb up Transfiguration Mountain where we will behold Jesus in all his unveiled and unrivaled glory.

Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.

At this highest height we will run squarely into the most unlikely occasion of Ash Wednesday with its clarion call: “From dust you have come and to dust you shall return. Repent and believe the gospel.”

In the wake of a global pandemic and its 2,000,000 deaths and counting we need the ashes of Wednesday like never before. It’s why we are banding together across the continents to do it together. We want you to band together with us for A Night With New Room: Ash Wednesday. Local churches, families, and individuals please register here now for this sobering and somber observance. With gratitude to an unnamed donor, this will be our gift to the Body of Christ.

And from the highest high of Transfiguration Mountain we will make the descent to the lowest low of Golgotha. We will sing our steps all the way through the forty days with forty Psalms—many of which will be laments. We call this year’s journey Soundtrack: A 40 Day Playlist through the Psalms. It will come with seven weekly teaching sessions on these Psalms, helping us to make the transition from a season of death to a new day of life. The songs will lead us all the way to the bottom and onward to the wide open door of the very empty tomb.

Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.

And for the 50 days following Resurrection Sunday we will rise up on eagles wings, walking a path through Paul’s letter to the Church at Philippi and receiving the deep restoration of our First Love—all the way to the great day of Pentecost.

Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.

And he will lead us every step of the way.

Our prayer today comes from Psalm 95:6-7:

Come, let us bow down in worship,
let us kneel before the Lord our Maker;
for he is our God
and we are the people of his pasture,
the flock under his care.
In the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit, Amen.

How are you feeling about the journey ahead? What is the intention of your heart?

For the Awakening,
J.D. Walt

  1. Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever. He is our God that wants none to perish. He is our God that heals our disease. He is our God that offers eternity for those who believe.
He is our present help in times of trouble. He Is, and because he is, I am. No greater love! Sweet Jesus let me gaze at your holiness and your great love. Fill me, anew with your wonderous spirit, open my eyes to see your splendor. Allow me to feel your presence in the mundane. I praise you for you are mindful of the insignificant, and you bring value to those who had none.
