Everything in Him Lives

We meditated last week upon the fact that life cannot separate us “from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Rom. 8:38). We said that when we stay in the love of Christ we have power to face up to life and its responsibilities. Therefore, nothing in life can separate us. There is another consideration, however, and more far-reaching: if life gets into the love of Christ to separate us, then life itself is changed—changed from life to Life. This is no mere play on words—it is fact.

When a common noun is placed in Christ it passes at once into a proper noun. When Jesus says, “I am the Bread of Life,” you have to spell both “Bread” and “Life” with a capital letter. Bread in Jesus is no longer bread, for it is bread in direct touch with the Author of bread—it is bread interfused with the life and love of Christ, and therefore Bread. Everything about it is heightened with new meaning, new purpose, new goal, new substance—it is Bread. It must be called “the Bread of the Presence.” Bread outside Him is the bread of the absence. It is just bread, keeping alive dead persons with dead purposes and dead goals. If money is put in Christ, dedicated to Him and His purposes, it is money with a soul, with creativity at its center—it is Money. When money is put in Christ, then it is no longer subject to decay and death. It is put into the Creator God, and when it is, it becomes alive with creative life and creative activity—it becomes Life.

If I stay in Christ, when life tries to get to me to separate me, it cannot reach me without itself being turned into Life. In which case, it would not want to separate me—it would join me in Life in Him. So I have only one business in life—to stay in Life and then life can do nothing to separate me.

THE PRAYER

O Jesus, my Lord, I have the only security—the security of Life itself. Hidden in Thee, I laugh at the ragings of life around me. Standing in Thee I say to life, “Come on!” for I know life to get at me would have to become Life. Glory, glory, glory! Amen.
