Come Holy Spirit, Part 4

How do you see the Holy Spirit at work in the world? As the series continues Shane Claiborne, Maxie Dunnam, and Stanley Hauerwas share thought-provoking answers about the Holy Spirit’s role.

Shane Claiborne- founding partner of The Simple Way, author of several books including Jesus For President, a prominent social justice activist and speaker.

“In John 14 Jesus talks about the Holy Spirit and he says:  “I tell you the truth, anyone who has faith in me will do what I have been doing… even greater things than these.” He then assures the disciples that, though he is leaving them in the flesh, the Holy Spirit will be with them – and live in them. This may be one of the most mysterious and wonderful miracles of all – God lives in us. The Spirit is not limited to our hands — but the Spirit wants our hands. Paul writes, “The life […]

Recommended Resource on Jesus: The Ascension

The Ascension of Jesus Christ may be the most under celebrated event in the present day church while also being one of the most significant. Brothers, Tim and Aaron Perry, authored a helpful text, He Ascended into Heaven: Learning to live an Ascension shaped life. Aaron let us know that Paraclete Press is making the electronic version of the book available for $1.99 through the end of January.

Seedbed caught up with Aaron recently to discuss the book. The short interview follows.

SB:   Why does the Ascension matter? Theologically? Practically?

AP:   People, made in God’s image, were to reflect God in their reign over the earth.  The Ascension is the event that restores the only faithful human, Jesus of Nazareth, to that position of leadership.  The Ascension also flows into the giving of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost; the same Spirit who draws people into the reign of Jesus and enables them to […]

Will Apple Textbooks Advance Ministry-Related Education?

Competition.  That’s the name of the game.  From sports to business, competition is what produces good results and great products.  Apple Inc. just introduced a new resource that may be of interest to many people.  A few years ago, Amazon released an e-book reader named Kindle.  Most of us have heard about the Kindle and may even own one.  Kindle allows the reader to access the Amazon bookstore from multiple devices (computer, smartphone, Kindle), purchase and then download books, articles, documents and various other reading materials to the Kindle reader or its corresponding app.

With the introduction of the Kindle, the e-reader market has flourished.  Many other e-readers have flooded into the market.  Each one has their own unique characteristics as well as many of the characteristics that seem to be the common denominator among them all, like highlighting text, note-taking and saving the notes to an accessible file.  Each of […]

Life Songs

Every Sunday, Seedbed will feature stories how of God is working through the people that make up the Church. Today’s post comes from David Baldwin, a student and Project Coordinator at Asbury Theological Seminary.

A life of a saint is surely like a song of praise lifted up to God. After 93 wonderfully full years of life, my grandmother recently passed away. At her memorial service, the minister described her life as being like a song with many verses that each spoke of the different aspects of her life. This was particularly appropriate for her since she was at one time a professional singer as well as an organist, pianist and choir director for several churches throughout her life. After hearing this eulogy, along with all of the memories shared by many of her family and friends, I found that I was barely aware of only one of the verses of […]

Come Holy Spirit, Part 3

How do you see the Holy Spirit at work in the world today? That is the question the Seedbed staff set out to answer. In part three of this series, we are featuring the responses of Greg Boyd, Nicky Gumbel, Will Willimon, Pete Greig, and Timothy Tennent.

Greg Boyd – President of Christus Victor Ministries, author of more than 20 books, Senior Pastor at Woodland Hills Church, and he was ranked #4 on Superscholar.org’s Most Influential Christian Scholar’s list.

“I am most excited about the way Holy Spirit is giving people a fresh vision of what the post-Christendom Church will look like. All around the globe, and from a remarkable diversity of tribes, the Spirit is calling people into the beautiful, humble, counter-cultural, other-oriented, enemy-loving, cross-carrying, servant Kingdom of God.”

Nicky Gumbel – Vicar at Holy Trinity Brompton, popular and award-winning author of several books, and is most well known for developing the Alpha […]

Websites "Blackout" to Protest SOPA and PIPA

Wikipedia, Reddit, BoingBoing, Mozilla, MoveOn.org and many others have all gone dark for the day. It’s part of a move to boycott two controversial anti-piracy bills: the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) and its senate counterpart, the Protect IP Act (PIPA). If you’re one of the nearly two billion people who use the internet, then the chances are these two bills could make a big impact on your life, if they are passed.

PIPA and SOPA Explained

PIPA and SOPA call for a crackdown on copyright infringment by restricting access to sites that host pirated material. SOPA targets overseas “rogue” sites that offer illegal digital downloads of movies and music. Battling piracy is nothing new (Napster, anyone?) but taking action against foreign sites can be difficult. Meantime, critics of SOPA say its a matter of defending online freedom. Jon Tennent, a Campus Ambassador for Wikipedia, says, “These bills are overreaching… It’s a dangerous legal environment […]

The Martin Luther King Jr. Dream Rises in the City of His Demise

It’s a school merger that’s making national headlines. It will combine the overwhelmingly black Memphis city school district and the majority-white Shelby county schools. It’s a result of actions by the Memphis school board and City Council, a March referendum and a federal court order. It’s the largest school district consolidation in American history, and it comes with major challenges – namely bridging rifts in race and class. But our guest poster today says Christ is doing something new there. Maxie Dunnam was the President of Asbury Theological Seminary from 1994 to 2004 and is currently the Senior Pastor Emeritus of Christ United Methodist Church in Memphis, Tennessee, which has more than 6,000 members. Dunnam writes:

We are experiencing a dynamic birthing and creative expression of ministry and mission in Memphis.  Ours is a very troubled city. Poverty and the huge racial divide play the most monumental role in our many […]

God Must Love Me

It was an unlikely meeting. I am a 32 year-old wife, mother of two, living in a well-established neighborhood. She is a 52 year-old single, recovering drug and alcohol addict. Her name is Barb.

I was in downtown Lexington, visiting with Rosario Picardo at  Embrace Church. He introduced me to her outside the building. We said hello, shook hands and both went our separate ways. I was headed inside to interview Rosario about his new book and she was headed to work at Embrace’s clothing bank. Little did I know that within the hour, she would share a story with me that would teach me a lesson I will never forget.

This is why we love Embrace Church. It is a church filled with stories like this one. We would love it if you download the digital version of the Embrace story. Every Sunday we’ll feature stories of what God is doing through the Church.
