7 Surprising Things Churches Have Done to Attract New Members

It seems like there’s always another local church in the news for pulling some outlandish stunt or another. And sometimes its hard to tell what their intention was, and other times its pretty clear that they were looking to get in the news.

One way we can begin interpreting these surprising actions by a local church is to examine their beliefs and determine whether they would be considered “orthodox”. Orthodoxy can be defined as the “right belief” about God and is typically characterized by the ancient creeds of the church.  To compliment their orthodox belief, we can then consider the “orthopraxis”, or the “right practice”, of the church.

Typically the orthopraxis of the local church is expressed in much broader terms than orthodoxy, and of the two is what flexes as local churches contextualize their practices to reach new members.

We have found 7 examples of surprising things that churches have done to attract […]

Relentless Grace Will Not Give Up

Love Chapel Hill is a church plant rooting itself in the cultural center of downtown Chapel Hill. Lead Pastor Matt LeRoy calls it “a beautiful collision of college students and homeless men; young professionals and families; artists, activists and academics.”

We believe that the most eloquent articulation of the Gospel is a love that gives itself away. This belief fuels our evangelism efforts and strategies. So we give ourselves away through “Strangely Warmed,” an initiative to collect and personally deliver warm winter clothing to our homeless friends. We orchestrate “piano drops,” leaving a piano on a busy street corner for artists to play and crowds to enjoy. Sounds weird, for sure, but in a creative town that draws artists and musicians from all over theSoutheast, it’s like speaking to them in their native language. We started “Grace on Wheels”—a partnership with the local Transit Authority providing neighbors in poverty with free […]

Come Holy Spirit, Part 5

How do you see the Holy Spirit at work in the world today? In part five of this series, we feature the dynamic answers of Ben Witherington III, Al Gordon, Stuart Townend, Thomas Oord, and Amy Oden.

Ben Witherington III– Professor at Asbury Theological Seminary, author of more than 30 books, and elected member of the prestigious Studiorum Novi Testamenti Societas.

“On where do I see the Holy Spirit working, I would say in the Middle East. Muslims are having vivid dreams of Issah, Jesus, even Muslims who’ve never read a Bible or had real contact with Christians.  The Spirit is up to something, undercover, behind the scenes, imperceptibly, but nonetheless definitely.”

Al Gordon –Services Pastor at Holy Trinity Brompton and co-founder of Worship Central, an international worship training and resource center.

“Here in the UK and in other parts of the world where we are working, I see the Holy Spirit searching for servants […]

Book Review: Generous Justice by Timothy Keller

“There is a direct relationship between a person’s grasp and experience of God’s grace, and his or her heart for justice and the poor.” (p. xix)

On a recent trip to Memphis, I was inspired by the network of organizations that have arisen from the ministry of a particular church in that city. The leaders spoke about justice and the gospel in a way that was sophisticated in understanding, yet simple and passionate in language. I believe in justice as a core facet of the gospel, but I left that trip energized to strengthen my own foundation and dream new ways to lead my own congregation in reaching our community with God’s ministry of justice.

Yet while both this young generation and many of our not-so-young church members resonate with practical compassion offered to those in need, there is a challenge. Most Christians joyfully participate in clothing and food drives, funds for […]

Jesus With Skin On

Grace Church defines their vision in part as a partnership with God to be “Jesus with skin on” to others. They view the work of God as a “joint venture” where we follow God and work with God to help people experience God’s grace and salvation.

The Saturday Post on Gymnastics of the Spirit

My Mary Kathryn, 9, is getting involved in competitive gymnastics this year in a gym in Lexington. I spend one evening each week watching her at work. Equipment of all aeronautical sorts covers the expansive gym floor. The gymnasts systematically work from one station to the next doing their exercises.

These young men and women, with the instruction of the masters (i.e. their coaches), push the human body to infinity and beyond. Through a thousand falls and missteps and almost routine crash and burn efforts they discipline their bodies in the movements of grace. As I scan the gym floor, almost everyone is pulling an epic fail somewhere.

At the same time, the place almost constantly flashes with bursts of perfection. I’m not talking about the perfection of flawless performance. Flawless performance may or may not be present. I’m talking about the brand of perfect that happens when someone goes head long, […]
